A participation survey by USA basketball shows that between the ages of 6 to 17 years old, there are over 37 million children that participate in basketball related activities. As a youth, I was no different than those 37 million children of today. I spent many years playing basketball for recreation leagues and eventually my school(s). I was blessed to have had some of the greatest coaches and mentors possible in my playing days. I played a lot and I learned a lot.
After my playing days, I have been blessed to really experience life. I have had the highs and the lows and have learned from all of them.
The SC Spiders (Sparkle City Spiders) is a basketball program whose primary focus is youth development. Sure, we care about making our players the best they can possibly be...but when we say that, we do mean on AND off the court. We pride ourselves on developing children with character that understand personal responsibility and composure are foundations for success.
We have developed a brand of basketball based on the teaching of "Lean Manufacturing"....and that is not a typo. I use the same principles as a basketball coach that I have used in my primary career for years as a Lean Champion.
While my true background is obviously in athletics, I have spent the last two decades of my life dedicated to the world of Manufacturing. When I decided to get back into coaching, I did so with the specific intent on basing our playing style around what I have termed #LeanBasketball. I knew it would take the discipline from our players and willingness to learn. In our 2015 State regular season, we won 100% of our games. Over all, we finished with a 95% win percentage.
PRINCIPLES OF LEAN (and Lean Basketball)
1. Specify value
2. Identify all the steps in the value stream
3. Identify the value-creating steps
4. As flow is introduced, let customers pull value from the next upstream activity.
5. Remove all wastes (aka MUDA)
