Leadership Opportunities: Team Captains and Student Delegates

"Good Players Inspire Themselves. Great Players Inspire Others."
We know that all schools in the Global Education City area want their students to be good leaders. We also know that GEC Students also want to be leaders. Well, good news! GBC is here to give the opportunity.

Team Captains

According to the GBC organization, team captains are necessary and required for every single team participating in the GBC. The GBC believes that a team cannot function without a powerful and open-minded leader.

The 3 C's to Become a Captain

To become a team captain, students must learn what it takes to obtain the title. We all know that being a team captain is quite an honor. Therefore, team captain positions are usually given to one or two people who have participated in the team for many years with a strong baseball IQ and a bright personality. However, most importantly, a team captain must be qualified to be the 3 C's.

  1. Caring
  2. Courageous
  3. Consistent

Every role and many decisions made by the team captain are based on the fundamental 3 C's. Also, the team captain is always on duty regardless of whether they are on the field or off the field. Some duties off the field include representing the school team in the GBC Student Meetings and taking care of the GBC Playyon website's team pages

How Do I Become a Captain?

Usually, team captains are chosen by the team head coach. The head coach can choose(or he can put it to a vote) up to 2 people to be captains. In the case of there being 2 captains, they will be managing players in different positions(i.e. Infield&Battery Captain, Outfield Captain). After the captain is appointed, the head coach must send the newly appointed captain's contact information to the GBC Student Delegates for them to be officially on duty.

Student Delegates

The GBC Student Delegates also participate and are in charge of the GBC Student Meetings but they do not directly represent the school they belong in. They are actually a part of the GBC Student Branch Government. In GEC Baseball Classic, there are two governing branches: The Teacher Branch and the Student Branch. Teacher Delegates generally take care of safety issues, financing, scheduling, etc. and Student Delegates take care of uniform management, event organizations, future planning, recruitment, public relations, special training help, and many more. Plus, the student delegates may act as a student voice to the teaching branch if any issues are given.

Which Roles are Different from Team Captains?

Student Delegates are why GBC Exists in the first place. GBC is a student-led non-profit organization that provides interscholastic baseball tournaments and individual support. The Student Delegates are the people who run the GEC Baseball Classic.

GBC Student Delegates must listen to team captains who represent the individual teams and players. They must be representing student as a whole, and not for their own schools they belong in. This underlines the core value of the GBC organization of being Fair and Square.

GBC Student Delegates, as head of recruitment and public relations, also take care of social media accounts and GBC news articles. They also post schedules, match results, game report and many more data when they are on and off the field.

How Do I Become a Student Delegate?

When a Student Delegate is needed, a registration is posted on the GBC Playyon website and players are encouraged to apply for the position. Although the Student Delegate positions are not "first come, first served", players are encouraged to apply fast as spaces fill quickly.

Usually, the GBC tries to maintain its student delegation population by a maximum of 8 seat total, and usually around 2 seats per team. However, students are not entirely chosen by which team they belong, but by their ability to perform their tasks fairly. A Student Delegate's guaranteed term is 1 season(Fall or Spring), with no term limits. A Student Delegate may be impeached or terminated if job performances are non-satisfactory or in the cases where they do not meet the basic requirements stated below.

To apply for a position as a Student Delegate you must...

  1. Be a participating player in the GBC in one of the teams
  2. Have adequate knowledge in the field of baseball
  3. Not currently in the position of a team captain or any GBC-related position
  4. Demonstrate the passion and support of a student-led organization
  5. Meet English language requirements; Be able to communicate in English

Team Captain or Student Delegate, I Can't Choose!

You may want to participate in both rewarding opportunities, but which one should you choose? Obviously, you can't pick both. Here are some suggestions.

Q: Are you a caring and friendly baseball-pro? Are you close with everyone on the team?

A: Yes? Then you are a team captain candidate.
Team captains may be chosen just by demonstrating their personalities.

Q: Are you a hard-working, dedicated player who also wants to be part of a non-profit?

A: Yes? Then you are a student delegate candidate. Student delegates maintain the motto of being "fair and square"  by demonstrating their professionalism.

We hope to see many players being engaged in leadership opportunities and events provided by GBC. Please check the registration page at our Playyon site for student delegate opportunities.

A Full Background on Future GBC Teams

"Baseball, the most popular sport in South Korea. Well..."
Baseball hasn't been good in the Global Education City(GEC) since its establishment in 2011. However, students have always been leaders and built their own baseball teams for their communities. Here are some to name a few.

Korea International School, Jeju Campus

KIS Jeju unfortunately does not currently have an official baseball team that is sponsored by the school. However, out of the four schools in the GEC, KIS has the most passion for baseball. As a result, the students of KIS Jeju has created an unofficial baseball team for themselves without the school's support.

This amazing passion of the students has motivated other schools like NLCS Jeju to create an official baseball team that is supported and sponsored by the school administration. In fact, even without school support, KIS Jeju has sufficient equipment such as baseball gloves, baseballs, everything required for baseball!

The KIS Jeju players have asked the school administration to promote their team to an official baseball varsity team for years, however the school's response was always "no" due to the lack of infrastructure and opportunities. The founders of KIS Jeju baseball team is on their graduation year and they might not even enjoy official baseball before they graduate! Hopefully, GBC can help.

North London Collegiate School, Jeju

NLCS Jeju is the first to implement a fully official varsity baseball team in the GEC! YAY! *celebrates in a British accent*

It is no secret that North "London" Collegiate School Jeju is a British school. Even their slogan reads, "An Exceptional British Education". Although we know that baseball and being British does not match, we know that baseball and an exceptional education does. As a result, the varsity baseball team for NLCS Jeju currently acts as a role model team for all GEC Schools.

However, it was not always like this. NLCS Jeju was not in total support of a baseball team and students had to lead the process of establishment. Students have recruited coaches who have played baseball before to coach them. Then finally NLCS Jeju baseball team, the first in GEC, was born without any assets for them. The team suffered the lack of infrastructure and equipment, causing many players to unfortunately leave the team for a 'brighter' sport. The school fields were not allocated in advantage of the newly created team, but supported to more popular sport such as rugby and the NLCS Jeju baseball team had to walk 15 minutes to a near-by local field to practice. Eventually, the team suffered a lack of players(only 3~5 people attended) and had to be abolished for "safety reasons".

However, starting from 2018, the founders of GBC has came up with a plan for competitive baseball and a interscholastic event and eventually came to a conclusion that NLCS Jeju baseball team had to be a role model for all schools to participate. All 18 players agreed and rejoined the baseball team the left and have designed, distributed, and invested their own money for a uniform that would hopefully unite them again.

Furthermore, the team has independently booked a full-sized baseball field in Seogwipo for practicing without school support. This has caused the school administration to see hope and future for baseball in the school and the entire GEC area.

Now, the NLCS Jeju Baseball team is truly a role model team for all other schools. The team currently holds practice in Kang Chang Hak Field, where the GBC hopes to host the games. Also, the team has produced delegates and leaders for GBC organization. In fact, the person writing this articles is from the NLCS Baseball team!

Saint Johnsbury Academy, Jeju

SJA Jeju, the yougest school out of the GBC and the GEC area, has openly talked about opening a baseball team.

"As our enrollment grows over the next several school years, and especially once we near full capacity in the high school, we will seek to expand our athletic options to include additional sports - such as baseball, softball and field hockey - while also further developing an outstanding golf program as well as Junior Varsity and Varsity teams for regional competitions." - SJA Jeju Athletics
Although SJA Jeju is the youngest, it is very pleasing that they are trying to expand and provide better education opportunities from the beginning. The GBC and all of its delegates are here to help achieve that goal.

Three Schools, One Baseball

All three schools, somehow lack baseball in them. Is there a better way to solve this problem and provide better experience for students? The answer is pretty simple and clear.

"YES."

If one school tries to build a good baseball team for themselves, good luck. Probably not going to happen without competitive opportunities such as interscholastic events. GBC is a united student organization dedicated to provide equal baseball the ALL 3 schools.
