Cooney Takes Charge

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
California based Coach Ady Cooney has been elevated to Head Coach of the USA Redtails. Following the Redtails Team Camp held in Tampa Bay, Florida last weekend, Cooney was officially appointed on Monday. “It was great to see how the ladies reacted to Ady and his technical approach to coaching,” said Founder and now former Head Coach Garen Casey.
“I’m glad Ady had time to work with the ladies last weekend and even though the English accent was difficult for the ladies initially, the level of communication and reaction to Ady’s commands was great to see and that certainly helped in my choice to move on”.
Cooney, a former Englishman now residing in California said “I’m excited and extremely proud to be selected for this role and for the opportunity to share my love and passion of rugby league with an amazing group of women. I had the pleasure of working with them this past weekend at our camp in Tampa and are focused on our preparation for the game in Vancouver and for what is ahead of us. We have a clear vision to qualify for the next World Cup and will continue efforts to identify and develop talent across America.”
Asked about the change of Head Coaches, Redtails Captain Samantha Black-Keels said “we’re really grateful for what Coach Garen has built for Women in Rugby League in the US. We welcome Coach Ady and are confident he will continue to lead us forward. It’s great that we have a growing coaching staff which shows we are on the right track and that more people want to get involved. My teammates and I will work harder than ever to continue elevating this program.”
With Cooney taking charge, that frees up more time for Casey to continue growing the game off the field. “As an organization, we have a plan in place to grow the domestic footprint. We started from nothing, and we continue to grow. To be where we are in the development stage considering the last 2 years were coping with the pandemic, we are very happy where we are at and there are even bigger things in our future,” he said.
The USA Redtails will play their first ever Test Match against neighbors Canada Ravens on 16th April in Vancouver, Canada. This match will also give the Ravens some practice leading into this years RLWC in England. There are also plans for further matches against Canada and Fiji later this year but for now, all focus is on Vancouver.
